When I was 11, I started getting back pain. I didn’t do anything special to bring this about. I was like other 11-year-old boys. I played with my friends, I participated in sport, I loved to read and draw, my parents loved me. I was, as far as anyone could tell, a normal and healthy young boy.
Of course, I would go on to eventually learn that as many as 50% of children suffer with spinal pain as they grow up. It’s no surprise that most of these children continue to have recurrent pain as they journey into adulthood.
I consider myself fortunate to have had this experience; I understood what it was like to be in regular pain for no apparent reason, and while my childhood enthusiasm was hard to dampen, I certainly began to develop anxieties around injury. My mother was very attentive to this and brought me to all kinds of therapists and specialists, in an effort for me to gain some understanding and hopefully some relief from my pain. Some were very good. However, I never experienced long term relief and more importantly, I often didn’t understand how the things we were doing had any link to how I was feeling.
Perhaps it was fate that a chiropractor was the first person to explain to me the link between my posture, my brain, and my pain. Treatment gave me fast relief, and around this time I began exercising in a boxing gym. I began to choose habits that resulted in far fewer injuries or pain episodes. My body became stronger; my mind became calmer. When I was 19, I realised that I didn’t have pain anymore, and I was incredibly fit. This started a lifelong relationship with my body that I still nurture today.
I would invite you all to lean into that same relationship, wherever you may be on your health journey.
